This morning we had an amazing sighting on our way to the barn to care for our baby chicks: A pair of wood ducks landed and perched in a tree in front of our cabin.
The males, or drakes, have colorful plumage and red eyes while the females have brownish-gray feathers with a distinct white patch around their eyes. They nest in natural cavities found in trees near water.
One of our goals for our forest management is to provide and enhance wildlife habitat. We’re so thrilled to see these wood ducks on our farm and will be installing some nesting boxes near our pond for them.
