As the holiday season brought its usual whirlwind of activity, we took some time in between artisan markets and fulfilling orders to prepare our mushroom logs for the colder months. Caring for these logs during winter is essential for ensuring a successful growing season when the weather warms up again. Here’s how we did it:
Protecting Against Winter Winds
Our first step was arranging the mushroom logs into crib stacks. This stacking method allows for proper airflow while also protecting the logs from harsh winter winds. The open structure minimizes the risk of damage while maintaining stability.
Shielding from Sunlight and Preserving Moisture
To prevent the logs from drying out, we covered them with fruiting blankets. These blankets not only keep the logs shaded and out of direct sunlight but also help maintain essential moisture levels. Moisture retention is critical for the dormant mycelium—the fungal network within the logs—to stay healthy through the winter. Additionally, the fruiting blankets allow moisture from rain or snow to reach the bolts, naturally rehydrating them during the season.
Sorting Out Old Bolts
While preparing the logs, we also took the time to sort out older bolts that were no longer productive or were experiencing bark slip. These logs have served their purpose in mushroom production, and now they’ll continue to be useful by helping to heat our home in our wood boiler. It’s a great way to repurpose materials and ensure nothing goes to waste.
Insulating Against the Cold
Winter temperatures can be tough on mycelium, so the fruiting blankets also provide insulation. This layer of protection helps regulate temperature fluctuations, giving the dormant mycelium a stable environment to rest and recharge.
Why Winter Care Matters
Taking these steps ensures that our mushroom logs are in the best condition when spring arrives. The mycelium, though dormant during the cold months, needs proper care to remain viable. By protecting the logs now, we set the stage for healthy, productive growth in the months ahead.
Looking Ahead
Winter may slow things down above ground, but there’s always something happening on the farm! This quiet season allows us to focus on the hidden magic of mycelium and prepare for the next chapter of mushroom cultivation. We’re already looking forward to seeing these logs spring back to life and produce another round of delicious, log-grown mushrooms.
Stay tuned for updates as the seasons change. In the meantime, we’ll be keeping our mushroom logs cozy and ready for what’s to come!
