Foraging Chicken of the Woods

Chester had mentioned to me that he thought he saw Chicken of the Woods while working in the forest one day. However, he couldn’t remember where he saw it. I took this as a fun challenge to find it! I hiked miles of our trails in search of the wild mushrooms.

Today, it finally happened when I wasn’t even trying to find it! I set out on a hike to measure something along our fence line and while walking back, I found this amazing specimen on a fallen oak tree. Ironic how sometimes you can find exactly what you’re looking for when you least expect it.

Since I wasn’t expecting to find mushrooms, I headed back to the house for supplies. Chester came with me to harvest it and I am so glad he did. We cut off the mushroom so we wouldn’t disturb the mycelium in hopes it will continue to grow next year. The bowl I brought wasn’t big enough and we ended up with almost 21 pounds of Chicken of the Woods! What an amazing find.
