Wood Ash & Biochar

What is Wood Ash

Our wood ash and biochar are produced right here on the farm from hardwoods harvested from our sustainably managed forest. Wood ash is a natural source of minerals, including calcium and potassium, and can be used to raise soil pH in gardens and agricultural applications. Biochar is a carbon-rich material that helps improve soil structure, retain moisture, and support beneficial soil microorganisms. Both products allow us to make use of our forest resources while returning valuable materials to the soil.

Ways to Use Wood Ash Around Your Home

Soil Amendment: Sprinkle wood ash evenly over soil surface and mix thoroughly before planting. Use sparingly to avoid over-application.

pH Balancing: Apply wood ash in small amounts and monitor soil pH regularly to avoid alkalinity buildup. Consult a soil testing kit for accurate measurements.

Pest Control: Create a barrier around plants susceptible to pests by lightly sprinkling wood ash around the base. Reapply after rainfall or as needed.

Compost Accelerator: Mix wood ash with compost materials in small quantities to avoid raising pH levels too quickly. Stir regularly to distribute evenly.

Traction Aid: Spread a thin layer of wood ash on icy surfaces, focusing on high-traffic areas. Use sparingly to prevent runoff into soil or water sources. Use caution not to track into house.

Household Cleaning: Mix wood ash with water to form a paste for scrubbing outdoor surfaces. Rinse thoroughly after cleaning. Wear gloves to avoid contact with skin.

Always wear gloves and avoid inhaling wood ash dust. Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture and direct sunlight.
