Measurements of Firewood

When buying firewood it’s helpful to know the different ways wood is measured. Standard firewood logs are at least 16” in length. Some people prefer smaller or larger log lengths depending on their stove size.

Standard Firewood Length
A face cord of wood is a pile that measures 8 feet long x 4 feet high x 16 inches wide. This can easily fit into a wood rack and is useful if you only burn occasionally for enjoyment.

Face cord measurements

The most common way for firewood to be purchased is a cord. This has a volume of 128 cubic feet, measured as a pile 8 feet long x 4 feet high x 4 feet wide. Three face cords equal one full cord of wood.
